[poor picture quality after 374ft] Note 1: Claude Friese-Greene developed his two-colour (red/blue-green) additive process from early experiments with his father William Friese-Greene (Biocolour, Colour Photography, Humfriese). In March 1924 a company formed by Claude Friese-Greene, Spectrum Films, gave a trade show of colour films at the Holborn Empire, including A QUEST OF COLOUR, a travelogue featuring scenes in Great Britain and Spain. Demonstrated in the USA in May, the process could be shown via an ordinary projector at a cost of one third of a penny over ordinary black-and-white film. In October 1925 THE OPEN ROAD series was announced, distributed by Wardour Films but with no production company credited. It was reported that 52 subjects would be supplied over the next three years. The trade show took place 29 November 1925, where 9 single reels were shown: 1) Cornwall (Land's End, Lamorna Cove and St Ives) and Devon (Plymouth and Cockington Village) 2) Devon (Torquay and Exmoor) 3) Somerset (Exmoor to Weston-Super-Mare) 4) The Wye Valley 5) Chepstow and Hereford 6) The Ludlow District 7) The Potteries (with close-ups of plates and vases) and interiors of a Sheffield steel works 8) North Wales, Liverpool and Southport 9) Blackpool by day and by night A review of the show credited Wardour as the distributors, Friese-Greene as the producer and stated that 26 reels would be on offer. No further reviews have been traced, but from the evidence of the films themselves and the cricket match shown in Reel 18 [part 1?] the series carried on into the Lake District and Scotland, then added London by August 1926. An intertitle in Reel 16 suggests that the series reached 24 episodes at least, and it seems likely that 26 were filmed, and presumably all released. All sequences mentioned in reviews feature in the surviving footage with the exception of the Sheffield steel works. Reviews also indicate that the OPEN ROAD colour was a marked improvement on that of the earlier Spectrum films. Note 2: The license number of the Friese-Greene car is NE 1699. Most of the sunsets featured were filmed using time-lapse cinematography.
